Poetry or prose

I'm currently working on a novel and so far it is going quite well. I still look back fondly to my poetry writing days as well but I want to forge ahead with this big prose project. What I would really like is to develop a prose style that is quite poetical in its tone and feel. Some of my favourite novelists are able to pen a sentence that just flows on in an eminently aesthetic manner. I'll just keep working on it and see if I can develop my 'voice'..

Last night I watched Letterman and he had Howard Stern on. He was quite entertaining and affable and made for a good guest. Certainly better than the previous show when famous airhead Paris Hilton was the main guest. That was just annoying and slightly embarrassing. And yet I gather that some men find her attractive. Quite honestly, she repulses me somewhat.

Spent a great night down the pub with some good friends of mine. It was someone’s birthday and this someone also introduced her new fellow to us. A nice bloke who seemed to cope well with all the attention lavished on him as the proverbial newcomer. A fun and raucous night followed and a great time was held by all. So there.

Sleep

After years of not being able to sleep in any more I am now finding I can quite easily have a bit of a lie-in. My apartment tends to be nice and quiet and a veritable haven of peace and tranquility. I feel okay here and perhaps that, in turn, enables me to really unwind and relax for a change. Anyway, that's my theory and I'm sticking to it. Call me old fashioned.

Poetry, that whimsical

I'm about to give one of my poetry books to a good friend of mine. I hope she'll appreciate it. You can never really tell when you give away one of your own books. Bus joy

I got back quite late from town last night on the bus and found that in contrast to some other places I have lived in the past, the experience was a safe one and there seemed nothing to worry about in the way of personal security. There were a few people waiting at the bus stop, the bus showed up dead on time, the driver was courteous and friendly and fifteen minutes later I was back home. Great stuff, really.

Ideas

I am working on a novel. And last night, in the midst of some De Profundis inner turmoil, I developed some ideas that may take the story in the direction that it needs to go. I love that feeling of knowing what to write next, that feeling that you never want to stop writing and just want to keep the thing going for ever. It's really a most wonderful feeling.

My books

I have just taken another interest in my published books. I had sort of left of trying to promote them as I did not seem to be getting very far. And, of course, I will soon be working on the production of my latest slim volume of poems in which I try to reflect some of my impressions of my new life in Sydney. Que sera, sera.

Rain and then some

It just stopped raining. It was another one of those torrential downpours that I have become familiar with living here in Sydney. I love seeing the rain pour down in gulping streams across the windows. Knowing that it is a good thing when it rains in this country is a good thing too, I suppose. Let’s hear it for the weather gods.

Music

Tomorrow, I will be joining a few friends at the nearby Birchgrove Acoustic music festival. Hopefully, the weather gods will be on our side. Wanderlust

I'm living in a huge country and I can't wait to get out of the city and go travelling and seeing some of the wonderful places. I'd love to go up to the Top End and visit the Kakadu National Park. And, of course, I'd like to go back to the far north of Queensland as well. And, the Pacific islands keep calling me as well. A hopeless romantic I'm not impervious to the island idyll idea. Call me old fashioned. Go on!

As so we face Easter and the Resurrection of our Saviour. Although, strictly speaking I am not practising this time of year does mean a lot to me. Somehow it makes more of an impact than Christmas. I think I’ll try to go to Church at some point over the weekend but knowing me that may very well not happen after all either.

Bar food

Went for a meal last night in a local pub. I had the steak special, surprise, surprise, and my dinner companion opted for the bangers and mash. Behind the bar were the two nice girls and a new star in town, a young Scottish bloke with a winning smile who seemed to be highly appreciated by the two girls. It was a fun night but unfortunately there was no live music yesterday evening. Oh well..

Books

Reading. Now I'm living the life of a single man again I have started to do more reading and I have to say I am really enjoying it. There's nothing quite like settling down to read for a few hours on end in a book you just know you are going to enjoy. What a pleasure for the senses. It engages the whole spectrum of human emotions and triggers thoughts that you would not have had otherwise. I've just put up a few book shelves and there is extra capacity, enabling me to buy some more volumes. Hooray!

Sports overkill

As if there wasn't enough sports on Aussie television we will have a 24-hour free-to-air sports channel tomorrow. All the sports you can stomach and then some more. And just when you get enough of all the sports, you get some more sports. Oh well..as long as they include some proper football, I don't mind.

Poem to a friend

I sent a poem I had written to a friend in the UK. The poem was about my feelings about Bristol and leaving that part of my life behind. It's emotional and whimsical and aims to evoke the 'feel' of Bristol, that funny old town in England. Funny stuff

There are lots of British comedians who appear here in Australia. Before long I am hoping to catch a few of them doing their stand-up. I had meant to see Dylan Moran but I have other engagements that weekend, unfortunately. There is still Ross Noble in June and I am hoping to get someone to go with me. I have seen Mr Noble in Bristol and he was very, very good. Utterly entertaining in his off-beat way.

Music

I've got all my CDs again after the delivery of my things from England earlier this week. It's great to be able to play my own music again. I have to use the DVD player and telly but will get a sound system soon enough. I played Secrets of the Beehive by David Sylvian this morning and really enjoyed it all over again. Lovely music on a lovely morning; that's what it was..

I’m just now listening to the radio. I’m listening to BBC’s Radio Five Live on the internet. I used to enjoy listening to this station when I lived in England. Somehow, the station seemed more balanced and less politically correct than some other BBC programmes. And, there was always something to laugh about as well. The British sense of humour, you can’t beat it, really.

There have been quite a few shark attack reports in the news recently. Surprisingly, a lot of these shark attacks have taken place in the harbour, which apparently is rather unusual. It seems that the reason why there are more sharks around is that the waters in the harbour are much cleaner. So there are now more fish and that in turn attracts more sharks. I’m staying on terra firma for a while.

Big ships

I missed the Queen Mary II docking in Sydney Harbour. Only days previously I had marvelled with a sense of awe at the sight of the enormous Queen Victoria ocean liner lying tied up at Circular Quay. The working week

The working week is, once again, over and done with. An exciting week at my new job, I will spare you the details but it has been good and uplifting. Funny is funny

Sport mad. The Aussies seem to be crazy about sports. Any sport, it seems. During the week it is not so bad but sometimes on the weekend all you see on each and every channel on telly is sport. The Valley

It lay bare and open that day
The words tumbled from our eager tongues
Pleasant whispers, elevated notions
Collided dreams, real-time infotainment
Too nice, too lovely to forget
Even then.

And later that day as evensong cleared
The words become touching
Whispers kisses
And nothing could turn back
The world was ours
And this night alone
We would live forever.

What I Believe

That a poem should be concise and not endless pages long,
And a word should uplift the weary soul, and then soothe.

That if you can you should go for a ride in a balloon,
And forget about what you think of your self altogether.

That the world is a wondrous and terrible place,
And life both beautiful and horrific.

That the intricate secret web of life itself is built upon paradox,
Or perhaps not.

Mountain Daze

Climbed to the peak,
Montserrat, mountain of the Black Madonna,
shrine of cliffs, roof of the world,
with Catalunya stretching out for hundreds of years all around.

While She, regal statuette, lodged high above the altar,
high above the world,
watches over us,
and weeps.

In Dutch

In the Dutch language,
all things seem clear,
and direct,
often brutishly blunt.

No room for prevarication,
or obfuscation, vaccilatory nuance.

They tell it like it is, you see,
Not as they wish it would be.
More refined, slightly more elegant.

Song for an Angel

Sing to me of distant loves,
of enchantress pining for a saviour,
of lectures unattended,
while the young maidens run free,
barefoot through dewy May fields,
in the same places we knew,
only centuries ago.

Vapour

I watched the olde-worldy train pull out
of the weather-beaten station.
Your suitcases and you were on board,
forever departing, and that's how you'll stay.

You left in summer, and the sunshine,
and the green grass and the clean crisp air,
All wanted to leave with you,
and the grime and dust remained.

And so did I.

Creeps

Shadows mark the hazy aura
Of what once was a thought.
That kiss, that pure emotion,
Our sense of needing, wanting bliss.

Now turned into afterthought,
Memory unwelcome,
That creeps us uninvited.

Salamander

Fiery twisted flame dancer,
Stretched toad-reptile,
Underworld reveller,
Your word has never been your bond,
Nor your heart your own to direct.

Foreign masters have you in chains,
And the light does not pervade
Into your better chambers.

Tripods

One of my favourite art forms in general and a much-loved pastime of mine in particular is photography and anything to do with it. The azure sphere looks out upon
a vast dark blanket that covers all

causing immeasurable mayhem
rendering mortals utterly mortal

Arise

Shine and sparkle like a glass
of finest crystal hue, cut supremely
never dare to not dare to dare all,
in sublime pursuit of that living thing itself
that makes all that went before
remorselessly inadequate,
and, ultimately, quite irrelevant.

Sleep Time

I wander in a dazy haze,
All eyes up-lit and sparkles,
Memories twine and twinkle near,
And lost is the word I cannot fathom.

I rear up and revel in the grove
Of what once came before.
Voices listen, listen out,
Noting all that moves a-shiver.

Dreamscape

Lying alone, sponge-dripped,
Fed on promised whispers,
Oriental island breezes,
Thoughts never quite uttered.
Windows covered with hazy shades,
Glass half empty, perennially,
Nothing stirs, no mention ever
Of anything remotely awkward.
Paradise perceived in 20-20 vision.

Salacious eventuality,

Dream Catcher

Snip, snipe,
Relish the dark night's whispers,
Slowly, creeps a shadow to the pond
Where, we all know, a monster hides,
From the world of day,

Rosary

Your tears like ruby crystal
on a string in my hand.
I watch your alabaster smile,
looks down on me, sinner.
Your hazel eyes like music,
blue-rimmed face; kind, wise.
You are not angelic, yet more so.
I walk along with you,
the garden welcomes us both.
Freshly scented, spring survives
my heartfelt lonely despair.

Stark

Word flow on from eager anger
stirred by notions out of flow
nothing moves within the sphere
of gentle caring.
Slender trees move to and fro,
smile upon the distraught traveller,
the woods appear like so many dreams
keen to envelop, soak up lightness.

Garlandine


Serpentine seams of silver ghosts
appear to lonely finger-shaped clouds
eager to belong, here, there,
somewhere..
Night cloaks down on this old town
and I walk ahead into a dream
of loveless flaws,
exceptions, trickling down
into lakes and liquid vaults
that locked out half my world.

An Apple

Apple of my eye, Eve incarnate
from rib of man's first child,
temptress tempted, fate incurred,
gods and angels crowd around
this Tigris grove, fiery breath,
songs of Seraphim, dimly audible,
in the rushing of the leaves,
the creaking of the tree,
bulging with the weight
of that ominous fruit,
the rushes in the river,
the sun's loud rays,
the words spoken
for the very first time,
and at evening,
that gaze upwards
to that silver pregnant moon,
rising and rising
for the very first time.

The Mark


Slither a-sliver of sleepy self,
dreams wake up to life renewed,
all overturning inside lovelessness,
like leaves of autumnal hue disperse.

Trees line the fringe of last refuge,
bones and skin keep in the storm,
cattish shrieks light up the night,
as alley life steps to the mark.

Memoire

Haze, surrounded by grey garlands of steamy thought,
Unwrapped into unfolding weavelets,
Turmoil and mayhem abound,
As in Pandora opening a treasure trove of woe.

Serene unquestions ask of themselves
Nothing so outstretched as time lost,
Perceived in agongy,
Or thronged in abject pain.

Walk though a wooded glen,
Smile though a furrowed pang,
Talk with a smooth whisper,
And never ever forget!

Looking Back

Walked through a green,
a copse of thoughts assembled
by ancient spectres,
forever lurking,
just out of reach.

Sang a song of hope,
for the trees and reeds,
lining the river,
where once I swam
when still a boy.

Loved a life,
lived in and out of time,
reaching for so much,
stumbling along the way
into my own sense of me.

Sky Disc

Eye, hung on a pin,
high above a smouldering,
ancient world,
sees all, knows all,
saw us before we came into being.
This solemn vizor may yet smile
upon little feeble ways,
displays of petty anger,
wars, hurt and more.
Placate it, lest there be wrath forecoming,
greet its rising complexion,
each and every day.

Teardrop

Sleek, forget me not,
to slide down a shapely cheek,
and look up one more time,
at eye curved in solitude,
passion crumbled,
night embraced.

Fox-like gloves left on the lawn
summer smiles a tender yawn

Velvet grass, damp with due
all the world left to pursue

Status Quo

In the gentle morning, I see
All around concentrated
In the tiniest droplet of steam
Sullenly sliding down the side
Of an over-boiling kettle.
No fear, no sweat;

Fondness

A whisper in mad morning,
earnest flutterings of an unquiet mind,

A slinking sense of fondness
for all that was, and myself included,

Where is that centre of all belonging, and more?
Is it in the stillness perceived in the midst of tragedy,
Blissful incantations of divine sanctuary received,
Oceans of turmoil and remnants of feelings,
All washed away in the flick of a tear-stained lash?

Nostalgic Forecast

I walk ablaze in a whirlwind dream
unable to focus on inner mayhem,
Words unravel into tangled webs,
sustain a sense of still-born fear.
Well within the spring inside,
feelings, notions roar.
I wish to sever heart from mind,
and pass through that dark door.

Silence fills a stark-white room
with nothing but remembrance.

Statutory Muse

World unfold a tearful eye
Over seas of tranquil glee

Further up ahead I glance

Stellar Faze

World weary untold tapestries of stars surround

Austral Days

Never ever dared to dream

Blue Haze Remembered

A sleep surrounded by a dream
That stretches on throughout the day,
Where all that isn’t bright must seem
An arcane sadness on display.

A thought enveloped by a hope
That imparts a sense of splendid wonder.

Rambling Associations

Dream, thought, sleep surrounded
Fenced-in undertows of worlds
As yet undiscovered, near-hovering
From alabaster cloud-constructed pods,

Grey storming hopeful skies winked rain at us;

To write my self a sparkling verse

My erstwhile dreams of love surround

An eye upon an ogre sky,
I left my world once more to fly.

I wearied like a turmoil shroud,
Far from soothing voices.
My mind was darkened by a cloud
That left me with few choices;
